This image was created for the CGSociety's twenty-second CGChallenge. Entrants were instructed to create an image inspired by David Brin's "Uplift Universe" books showing human-extraterrestrial interaction. This image was modelled with Wings 3D 0.99.01, sculpted and textured with ZBrush 3.1, composed in Softimage XSI 6.5 (a free version provided for the contest), and rendered with mental ray. The hair on the alien hand was done with Softimage, while that on the human hand was created with Maya 7.0's paint effects and exported to Softimage as geometry. The background was created with Apophysis 2.07. Final compositing, retouching, and colour correction was carried out in Adobe Photoshop CS.

I love the concept of Terrans going out into space and at least for a time having Military and Technological supremacy maybe even numarical, and taking it upon ourselves to uplift other primitive cultures

for better or for worse

♥ What specie is this one already? It's been a while I haven't read Brin and the only book I've finished so far was Startide Rising.

It was a while ago that I did this, and that I read the novel Startide Rising. If I remember correctly, part of the plot involves the discovery of primitive tool-using aliens on an island on the world on which the human ship is hiding out to make repairs. I think it was the primitive tool-users that inspired the alien hand, here. The novel doesn't seem to have stuck in my mind all that well, though.

Something about it makes you pause and stare. Something really strange about it, but attractive, too. Quite cool!

That creature only has one digit on the side, and four on the top? We certainty are different, aren't we?
