Artist's Comments

This started as a 3D doodle done in Wings 3D. I ended up tweaking it and doing the UV mapping in ZBrush 3.1, texturing it in Maya 7, doing some scene setup in Softimage XSI 6.5, and rendering it with Indigo 1.1.9. I tweaked the final image in Photoshop. (Yes, I know it's weird to own both Maya and Softimage, but I purchased the former before I got the latter for free from the latest CGSociety contest).

EDIT: I didn't quite like the post-processing on the image I'd originally uploaded. This one is a bit greener, and I've taken out some artefacts I'd accidentally introduced in post in the previous one.

EDIT 2: Indigo has now gone commercial, which I find disappointing -- both because it's always better to keep software free, in my opinion, and because I really don't think it was as fully-featured and bug-free as a commercial piece of software ought to be. In particular, there are big problems with the way it handles UV coordinates of subdivided meshes. If you're interested in an unbiased renderer, I suggest checking out LuxRender instead of Indigo. I won't be using Indigo any more, myself.

It's not about who you are or where you're from
It's about where you are and what you did to get there, son.

By the way, I don't think it's strange to combine the advantages of different applications.
It's kinda progressive.

Thanks to all who commented. I have no idea what it is either, but I kind of liked the way it turned out :) .

Awesome piece of art! I found it on indigo website first, and I gave it a try here. I'm currently using it as a wallpaper. Can it be found somewhere in better quality? It would be great.

The only thing I don't quite like in your picture is that tiny spot on top of the object. It is a reflection of some light or something. It doesn't suit somehow to the other elements. Different texture/colour/style maybe.

The 1600x1200 download here is the highest-resolution version available. One problem with unbiased renderers like Indigo is that the output tends to be grainy. This was baked over a weekend on several computers and averaged to minimize grain, but there's still some noise. I don't have a higher-quality version (unless you count the uncompressed PNG or TIF versions, which lack the JPEG compression artefacts).
