This scene was created using Wings 3D 1.0.1, Roadkill 1.1, ZBrush 3.5, Softimage 6.5, mental ray, and Photoshop CS3 for the foreground ships, Blender 2.48 for the planet and moon, and Apophysis 1.9 for the diaphanous streams around the black hole. Yes, that's a long list, but I always like to use the right tool for the job. Final image assembly was done in Photoshop CS3.

I don't know what most of those programs are :D. What's so great about this is that this could be a monster or a nebula.

If ever you're bored, several of them (Wings, Roadkill, Apophysis, and Blender) are freeware that anyone can download and play with.

And thanks! :)

You very definitely know what you are doing. :) My hat's off to your description!
I love how you've rendered the ships, and the planet and moon look great.
However, I think the thing that really makes this pic look strong are the fantastic streams of diapanous particle streams coming from the black hole. :)
oh, and thank you for extending my vocabulary just a little bit more! :D

Thanks! I liked the way the streams turned out, too. Apophysis is a lot of fun to play with :D .
