Prospectors by vmulligan Prospectors by vmulligan
I'm having a lot of fun with this scoutship model.

These ships were modelled in 3ds max 2011, textured with Zbrush, Roadkill, Darktree, and Photoshop, and lit and rendered with Maya 2011 and mental ray. Background nebulae, planets, and stars were painted in Photoshop CS 5.1.

Woah I missed this one! Ships underway toward some bright star, just classic. Love the cool blue of the star's light on the ships with the warm stellar background. I also enjoyed seeing your design process for this ship design.

Good work! Could I use this for a prequel of "Don't Follow the Light?" ([link])?

Well, I'm trying not to have too many of my pics floating around out there at the moment. I'd rather not, if that's okay. Sorry.

Thanks a lot! Someone else mentioned Foss, too. I like his work a lot, and I tend to be inspired by classic sci-fi art from the '60s and '70s.

Awesome work - the whole image feels very painterly. It reminds me of John Berkey's work - the color palette, especially the striking nature of the blue reflection off the ships, reminds me of some of his paintings in a fashion. :)

Thanks a lot! I really like sci-fi art from that time period, so artists like Berkey are a major inspiration.

I especially love the ship trails ion this scene :) Did you use a particle emitter, post or another technique for this?

The trails are hand-painted (the last thing that I hand-painted with a mouse, before I got my new tablet :P ) in Photoshop. I liked the way they turned out, too.

Thanks!

I think that the trails look a bit to clouds like, looks like you have used the same brush for the nebula as the trails, i think the trails should be a lot smoother. You could define the nebula in the background a little more, even though this will change the prospective a bit, but ti will liven the scene up and make it look more ye catching.

I think it's interesting how this image is specifically proposed as a reference for role play, although there are so many images around on Deviant Art. It's a deserved recognition for its exceptional emotional power.

It captured my eye for several strong aspects that are kind of underplayed, maybe a result of Vikram's scientific mind. The scout ships, by their bulky, edgy, functional looking main section come across like tug boats to me. Or any vessel that has a modest, non-glamerous role. This makes the speed and formation that is depicted the more interesting I guess. A suggestion that something special must be about to happen. And they are soldiers, not vain heros, which makes them, well, real heros and easy to identify with.

So, this may sound like over interpretation, I wouldn't venture to lay them out if Dodes15 hadn't confirmed the clear inspiration emanating from the picture. Also, in space the bulky form doesn't matter etc. but we still read form in the earthly way. And it's pretty interesting to look at the image turned 90 degree clockwise.

Another thing I like is the degree of contrast on the ships. It's kind of perfect in that it shows the sharpt contrast of lacking ambient light in space, while preserving detail to look at. Can I suggest the faintest of reflections from the back from their own exhaust? I'd simply be curious what effect that might add.
