Moon Test by vmulligan Moon Test by vmulligan
A test rendering of the moon, using a 16-bit elevation map from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and an albedo map from the same mission. This was rendered with Maya 2012 and 3delight, and processed with Photoshop CS5.1. Image copyright 2012 Vikram K. Mulligan; unauthorized use prohibited.

wow, this is incredible! I was wondering how you got so much detail until i read that you used maya. I wish it was easier to create such detailed planets without the use of 3D software. I have blender, but of course, it doesn't compare to maya at all.

Actually, Blender is getting pretty close, now. In any case, the renderer here was 3delight, which is a Renderman-compliant renderer (a type that uses the REYES algorithm, which is terrific for fine, detailed displacements). 3delight has a free version, and Renderman exporters for Blender do exist if you poke around. There are also some entirely free Renderman-compliant renderers out there, including Aqsis (which I like quite a bit) and Pixie. Even without external renderers, Blender does have decent displacement capabilities. Anyway, the message is that there are plenty of very powerful free tools out there, so don't assume that you have to go to the commercial software for great results!

Some links to good free renderers that can plug into Blender:
Aqsis
Pixie
3delight (commercial, but with a free version)
LuxRender (NOT a Renderman-compliant renderer, but it's quite powerful, and it has its own Blender export plugin)

The Blender-To-Renderman pipeline:
An exporter for 3Delight (This should be usable for any Renderman-compliant renderer, though I haven't tried it)
Rib Mosaic (A general Blender-to-Renderman exporter. I found the old version for Blender 2.49b to be quite powerful, but I haven't tried the new versions for 2.5x or 2.6x).

Hope this helps!
