Galaxy by vmulligan Galaxy by vmulligan
This is my first attempt at using Apophysis to create something realistic. This galaxy is a combination of an Apophysis fractal flame and a lot of Photoshop CS retouching.

I've just never heard the term. Is it a play on "beauty mark"?

Oh, the marks on the hindquarters of "My Little Pony" ponies? If that's what you meant, sure, I guess -- if you want to redraw it in the style of one of those marks, go for it. I don't think you need my permission to create original art of your own inspired in part by one of my pieces; you only need permission if you're using a work of mine directly (e.g. if you wanted to copy-and-paste it onto the flank of a pony).

Cheers!

Terrific work. It looks great!

Is the blue/white cloud thing in the outer ring part of the fractal or is it a brush?

Thanks!

Oh, no -- that outer part is fractal too. The pale orange gradient at the centre was added in Photoshop, but the texture is all from Apophysis.

I definately like.... I'm currently working on a project atm that requires I design a "galaxy" but I dunno, all my experience is photoshop. I'll look into this Apophysis and see what that's about.

Apophysis is a fractal program. It's not always easy to get a desired shape, though you can always get interesting shapes. It's possible to make galaxies with it, but you might have better luck just sticking with Photoshop.

Still, it's free and it's fun -- so there's nothing lost by playing around with it!

did the flame come out spiral, or did you use twirl filter in PS?

If I remember correctly, it spiraled a bit as a raw fractal, and then I exaggerated the twirl in Photoshop after the fact.

you did good not making it look stretched and filtered, neat.

I tried to twirl it no more than necessary, precisely for that reason. I remember trying a few different twirl settings until I found one that I liked, that didn't have too much distortion.

Possibly -- though we've only ever seen our own galaxy from the inside, so it's hard to say...

It makes me think of a roulette wheel--which, given the laws of probability and eons of time, is probably apt.

Have you considered re-creating some of Bonestell's works in CGI? You may be the one to do it...:)

I try not to reproduce other artists' works exactly, though I might draw inspiration from them. I am heavily inspired by the work of sci-fi artists from the '60s and '70s, however.

very well done, fabulous work. it is nice to see that others see the potential of apophysis for more than just making fractals.

Thanks a lot! Yes, I like integrating Apophysis output into scenes that aren't obviously fractal-ish. I want to explore the technique more.
