This was painted in Photoshop CS5.1 with a Wacom Intuos4 tablet. Foreground ships were modelled in Wings 3D 1.4.1, textured with ZBrush 4R3, and rendered with Maya 2012 and 3Delight for Maya 6.0.

I'm amazed by the level of detail. When I fullview the magnified part you submitted as a separate deviation it still looks great.
Interesting image. Most just do A-discs with "polar jets".
It sure makes doing the centers easier.
(I still say "black holes" make for great inspiration for art & Science Fiction writers, but in truth they are pure mythos; nothing more than misapplied mathematical miscalculations attempting to explain anomalous motions of other stellar objects.)
Just like in Stephen Hawking's Universe documentaries, in the episode about the time travel.
