Black Holes by vmulligan Black Holes by vmulligan
Hmm... I'm not completely satisfied with this, but here's a possibly finished version of the "Black Holes" piece. I don't like the fact that it doesn't really draw the eye anywhere -- the composition isn't quite right, to my mind. Oh well. I'm still re-learning how to work in 2D after years of 3D work. With 3D, it's easier to change a composition radically in the middle of working on it...

This was painted in Photoshop CS5.1 with a Wacom Intuos4 tablet. Foreground ships were modelled in Wings 3D 1.4.1, textured with ZBrush 4R3, and rendered with Maya 2012 and 3Delight for Maya 6.0.

Interesting image. Most just do A-discs with "polar jets".

It sure makes doing the centers easier. ;)

(I still say "black holes" make for great inspiration for art & Science Fiction writers, but in truth they are pure mythos; nothing more than misapplied mathematical miscalculations attempting to explain anomalous motions of other stellar objects.)

It almost seems to be moving... :omg:

Just like in Stephen Hawking's Universe documentaries, in the episode about the time travel.

Nice one Vik! Did you use a filter on those ships to give them a painterly look?

Thanks! No, no painterly filter on the 3D elements -- though I did play with contrast and colours to bring them in line with the 2D painted elements.
