Two scoutships explore the moons of an uncharted planetary system. This image was heavily inspired by the sci-fi art of the 1960s and 1970s -- particularly the works collected in Stewart Cowley's Spacecraft: 2000 to 2100 AD.

These ships were modelled in 3ds max 2011, with UV layout done with Roadkill 1.1 and Maya 2011. Textures were generated with Darktree Textures 2.51, ZBrush 4.0, and Photoshop CS3. The scene was assembled in Maya 2011 and rendered with mental ray. Background moons were also rendered with Maya and mental ray. The textures on these moons are colour-shifted maps of the Jovian moons Callisto and Io. Final composite was put together in Photoshop CS3.

Impressive, smooth airbrushed look of the gas contrasts nicely with the detailed ships...love your take as well on those TTA-era illustrations. Do you like any of Dan McPharlin's work style? (It looks like it fell straight out of an old OMNI magazine) [link]

Merci beaucoup!

Yes, I like his style quite a bit (and others of the era). I liked Omni when I was a kid. It's a pity that it's gone, now.

You're welcome, me too...doesn't seem anything of that magazine's style has come along since.

I recognized these from the thumbnail. Originals by Angus McKie, if memory serves.
An aces homage.

The image that inspired this design, yes -- though the design is only very loosely based on that.

Regardless, it's still nice to see some good old "rocket ships" up in here; it's a refreshing break from all the titanic, uber-sleek, galaxy-crossing starcraft. Hertiage must be reviewed from time to time.
Cowley had two more of the "TTA" series of books: Spacebase 2000 and Spacewreck. I certainly hope you can produce more of these reinterpretations in future.
